Can Household Pests Put Your Pet Lives at Risk?

Ant problems in house

Pests can leave you itchy, red, and swollen. They can do far worse to your pet, with some bites and stings even being fatal. The first step to keeping your pet safe is awareness. Know what to look out for, and know what to get rid of, and you may save a feline or canine life or two.

Look Out For Spiders

Spiders can get rid of bugs but, if you are not careful, certain species can get rid of your pet, too. Brown recluse spiders do some pretty nasty things to humans, and the effects on pets can even more harmful. Most spiders are solitary, but some build large cobweb communities. (These cobwebs are strong, too. In proportion to spider size and weight, they are stronger than steel.) With over 100 species resembling ants in appearance and pheromones, it is important to learn how to distinguish spiders from other household pests. Contact pest control the moment you recognize the telltale two part body, comprised of a cephalothorax and abdomen. Professionals can help you determine whether you are dealing with spiders, or any number of types of black ants.

Know the Best Way to Remove a Tick From a Dog

Ticks in your home can be dangerous, especially to pets. There are many different species of ticks, so be prepared to remove ticks ranging from the diameter of a sesame seed to ticks as large as fingernails. Always wear gloves, otherwise you will need to know about removing ticks from humans, and get a pair of sharp, pointed tweezers. Once you remove the tick, stick it in a vial of alcohol with the date. That will help you if you need to visit the vet, or should you need to contact pest control for tick extermination.

Keep your pet safe from household pests. Keep spiders in check, and know the best way to remove a tick from a dog, and you will save cat and dog lives.

  1. yikes. i had no idea spiders could be so harmful, but i guess it does make sense– especially if you Google pictures of brown recluse stings and bites on humans. I know a few humans, even, have died from them too (even if it’s not as common).

  2. I’ve heard spider venom, bee stings, and house centipedes can all be poisonous to dogs and cats. House centipedes move so quickly (nasty things), that I’m not too worried. Bees and spiders can be a problem, and I always get nervous when I see them!
