There is pottery making that is done professionally, for commercial or retail purposes. However, there are many people who enjoy pottery making as a hobby. No matter what the purpose of making pottery might be, there are specific pottery tools and supplies required.
Pottery is made by forming clay into objects and then heating them to high temperatures. They are heated in a pottery kiln which is specially designed for heating or firing the clay and removes the water from it. This allows the clay to harden and sets the shape.
The texture can be changed by mixing things into the clay before forming. Additives which are coarse, such as sand, are sometimes added to the clay. The clay is shaped with the help of a pottery wheel. Pottery wheels and supplies are available for sale, and can often be found online. Pottery making has a very long history, and can be traced back as far as the 15th century B.C. when glazed stoneware was being created in China. Great references here.

My daughter is 11 and she wants to sign up for a pottery class. I think it will be fun for her, and she is very artistic so I can not wait to see what she makes.
When I was younger, and had more free time, I used to take ceramics classes. I still have a couple of the things that I made. I also made some things that I gave as gifts.
